Child safety

Child safety standards

SamajMilan is an app for finding a life partner for marriage, and it is only for people aged 18 and over. We have zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation. These standards apply to the SamajMilan app and to this website.

Version v1.0Pre-launch draft, pending legal review

The age rule

18+Only for people aged 18 and over

Zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation

Age checks

Age is checked twice

If the person a profile is for is under 18, the profile cannot be made at all. The same rule applies when parents register.

  • At registration

Checked by: the app and our server, automatically

The app asks for the date of birth, and its list of years starts 18 years back. On top of that, our server refuses any profile for someone under 18.

  • At samaj office approval

    Checked by: the samaj office

No profile is shown to anyone until the samaj office approves it. Before approving, the office sees the date of birth and age, and can send the profile back for correction or reject it.

  • When a samaj office adds a member itself

    Checked by: our server, automatically

The same 18-year rule applies when a samaj office creates a profile on behalf of a family.

Zero tolerance

Zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation

In these standards, a child is anyone under 18. All of the following are completely prohibited on SamajMilan, in profiles, photos, chat or anywhere else:

  • Child sexual abuse material (CSAM)

Any photo, video, drawing or text that shows a child sexually, including edited or computer-made images. Making it, sharing it, asking for it or keeping it.

  • Sexual exploitation of a child

Using a child sexually or for money or favours, trafficking children, or threatening a child to get images or money.

  • Grooming

Befriending or contacting a child with a sexual intent, or using a family to get access to a child.

  • Child marriage and profiles of minors

Making a profile for anyone under 18, or arranging the marriage of a child. In India the legal age of marriage is 18 for a bride and 21 for a groom (Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006).

  • Sexual talk about children

Sexual talk, jokes or comments about children, or excusing the abuse of children.

There is no warning and no second chance for any of these: the profile is hidden at once, the account is closed for good, and we report it to the police.

How to report

If you see anything wrong, tell us at once

Report even if you are not sure. If it turns out to be nothing, no harm is done; if it is real, a child may be protected.

In the app

  1. 1. Open the profile you are worried about.
  2. 2. Tap "Report".
  3. 3. Choose the closest reason: "inappropriate photo" for a photo, "other" for everything else.

The report reaches that profile's samaj office at once. The family you report is never told who reported them.

Write to us directly

For anything involving a child, besides reporting in the app, also write to our child safety contact, so that our own team acts alongside the samaj office.

The name, email and phone number of our child safety contact will be published on this page before the app opens to the public. Until then, report in the app and tell your samaj office.

Mention the profile number shown at the top of the profile.

Child safety contact details

To the police

If a child is in danger right now, do not wait: call 112.

Please note

Never forward, download or screenshot material that shows a child sexually, not even to report it. Doing so can itself be a crime. Just tell us the profile number and what you saw.

After a report

What we do as soon as we hear

  1. 1. Hidden at once

The profile is suspended, so nobody can see it.

  2. 2. Evidence kept

The profile, the report and the records are kept for the police, as the law requires.

  3. 3. Police told

We report it to the police and the national cyber crime portal.

  4. 4. Closed for good

The account is closed and cannot sign in again.

The family that reported is told in the app that their report was reviewed.

The law

We work fully with the police and the authorities

We follow Indian law on the protection of children, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Information Technology Rules, 2021.

When we learn of child sexual abuse or exploitation, or of such material, we report it to the police and on cybercrime.gov.in, keep the evidence as the law requires, and answer lawful requests from the police and the courts.

Child safety contact

Who to contact about these standards

Our grievance officer is also our child safety contact. They handle every child safety report, question and request from the authorities.

The name, email and phone number of our child safety contact will be published here and on the grievance officer page before the app opens to the public. Grievance officer page
